COMPLETE EVALUATION SYSTEM
How to Evaluate the Potential
for Success of a New Product or Technology By James F. Riordan
First published in 1990, and extensively updated and amended in 2003,
this world renowned and industry acclaimed product evaluation system contains
a powerful and proven system for evaluating the potential success or failure of
a new product or technology.
If you are an inventor and your product idea passed our Free Initial Idea Evaluation
with a score of 60% or more, and it appears you may
have a winner, your next step is to do a thorough and complete product evaluation
using this comprehensive and detailed evaluation system, now available on CD,
to make a final determination of whether your product is truly a winner or
loser. This evaluation system is the same system already being used by
many successful inventors, as well as corporations as large as 3M, and will
provide you with all of the "hard" questions which we have proven
over 25 years must be answered before you can really be sure whether you have
a winner or a loser. You will use this proven evaluation system on every
idea you have for the rest of your life as you invent for a living.
You will be able to quickly tell, with a high degree of accuracy,
whether an idea has the potential to make you financially independent, free you
from your present job and allow you to fire your boss and start your own
business. And, remember, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REVEAL YOUR IDEA TO ANYONE,
AND YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FIVE HUNDRED TO FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS TO SOMEONE ELSE
TO FIND OUT WHETHER YOUR IDEA IS WORTH MONEY.

What others say about the Complete Evaluation System: "Excellent, excellent, excellent.
Had your book How to Evaluate the Potential for Success of a New Product or
Technology been available to me years ago, I would have saved hundreds of
thousands of dollars in bad decisions and years of time and frustration.
Thanks for taking the time to compile all the relevant issues and questions
in a logical, straight forward manner that marketing guys like yours truly
can follow and apply. Lets stay in touch."
Michael Colozzi

"As an evaluation system for
comprehensive detailed evaluation of a new product or technology, this book
is better than anything else on the market. I plan to use the book as
a reference for my students and in my own consulting business. I
recommend that other academics, consultants and professionals involved with
the innovation process add it to their libraries."
Gerald G. Udell

helps inventors present their products to Wal Mart Stores)
"This is the best book on product evaluation that I have seen
in my thirty years of product marketing. Mr. Riordan uses a
36-point system to spot the money-makers and to avoid the losers by guiding
the reader with a cogent, practical step-by-step method of evaluating any
product. An extremely valuable tool for anyone engaged in the evaluation
of a new product, it serves not only the corporate executive who is considering
the acquisition of a new technology from an outside source but the assessment
of a product to be developed in-house; this very fact tells the inventor that
he should study this book as well, so that he may present the manufacturer,
his potential buyer, with a sound presentation based on due diligence."
D. Rosborough
President
International Invention Register
"This book is a must have for any investor or manufacturer
interested in backing or acquiring outside products or technology. It is
a should have for any manufacturer developing products in house."
Minnesota Inventors Organization
"The question most commonly asked by inventors is, "How can I tell
whether my idea is worth pursuing without telling anyone what it is?" Now there
is a proven alternative to getting ripped off by shady invention marketing
companies. Evaluate your own idea with this system"
Norm Parrish
President
National Congress of Inventor Organizations (NCIO)
"I began reading and doing the exercises in your book on Saturday
night. I'm so impressed (as well as depressed from time to time) as I work
through it. I told you after your presentation before the ITM group, here
in Santa Rosa, how impressed I was with the knowledge, information and experiences
you shared. Your book goes beyond that to the point that it is almost
"incredible" the insight you have gained over the years about the inventive
process."

"As I began reading your book I began 'highlighting' paragraphs I
felt were of importance. Only a few pages into it I realized I would be
highlighting the whole book! Thank you for lots of great information!"
Charlie Grissom

"Personnel in our Technology Analysis Department have reviewed your
book, "How to Evaluate the Potential for Success of a New Product or Technology,"
and are impressed with the apparent completeness and thoroughness of the process
described therein. They also feel the degree to which the book's methodology
adds to and/or complements procedures already in place at 3M merits a closer
look and a "use test" by several of our leading divisions that employ similar
techniques. Since 3M is continually striving to improve all its processes
and not let large opportunities slip through the cracks, the methodology your
book teaches could provide important improvements. Several of 3M's most
innovative divisions will be asked to apply the process in comparison with their
current methodology."
Kerry S. Nelson

"After looking through your book it is apparent that my product
meets very few of the criteria for a salable product."

"This guide details the process of deciding whether to market a
new product. It is not as complex and expensive as big companies make it
nor as intuitive as most entrepreneurs assume."

"Now a highly-successful inventor and consultant, Riordan has spent
most of his life with a sharp eye on product development and manufacturing
processes. And, like the hero of our story, he remains open to sharing
the knowledge he has gained. To that end, Riordan has written one of the
inventing world's most comprehensive books. HOW TO EVALUATE THE POTENTIAL
FOR SUCCESS OF A NEW PRODUCT OR TECHNOLOGY. The book, which provides a
step-by-step system for evaluating and developing new products, has received
nearly unanimous praise from both inventors and business people."

"A belated thank you for your letter and the wall chart,
"Path to Profit." I've seen several charts and yours is the best.
I have recommended it to several people already. By the way, I don't need

"This is simply the best single tool for inventors and product
developers on the market today. Any inventor who is serious about making
a living from his ideas must have this poster. Every time someone comes in
my office and tells me they have an idea for a new product, I show them this
poster so they can see first hand how much work is involved in the process.
That immediately separates the ones who are serious from the "wanna-bes."
I use it for every new idea my company produces."

FAQs Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is a turbo resonator?
A. It is a device used on the 2.7 liter Mercedes Benz turbo diesel
engine to slightly lessen the intake whine of the turbocharger.
Q. What exactly is this turbo resonator failure problem I have been
hearing about on the Sprinter (tm) and Freightliner(tm) van chassis?
A. A typical turbo resonator failure happens under a period of maximum
boost either climbing a hill or accelerating off a stop light with a load in the vehicle.
The resonator is made up of injection molded plastic parts which are bonded together. The
failure results from the parts separating from each other and allowing turbo boost air to
escape from the intake system.
Q. What happens when the Sprinter turbo resonator fails?
A. The boost sensor sends a low pressure signal to the engine's
computer which thinks there has been a catastrophic failure of the turbo. The vehicle
immediately goes into "limp home" mode which results in a nearly total loss of ability to
climb hills and a top speed on flat ground of about 35 to 40 mph. This usually results in
having the vehicle towed in for repair. In addition, the check engine light comes on. If
our Eliminator is installed after a failure, the check engine light should go off after a
few starting cycles.
Q. Can a turbo resonator failure make the vehicle unsafe?
A. We have spoken with one Sprinter RV owner who had his turbo resonator
blow out while trying to pass an 18 wheeler on an uphill grade and he barely made it back
into the lane behind the truck before being hit by another 18 wheeler coming downhill in the
other lane.
Q. Is there any permanent fix for this problem?
A. Yes our company has developed a permanent fix for the problem with
the development of our turbo resonator Eliminator, the new SRE-06, which is now available
for $139.95 plus shipping (and CA tax for CA residents).
Q. How long does it take to install the new Eliminator?
A. About 20 minutes, following clear & simple directions which are included.
Q. My turbo resonator has already been replaced shouldn't it be ok now?
A. One would hope so but that is not the feedback we are getting.
According to Sprinter representatives with whom we have spoken, this part is made by a contractor
and it is on its third revision and still having reported failures. Many owners are having
multiple failures only a few thousand miles apart from each other, causing their RVs to need
repair in the middle of a vacation or interrupting their workday with a broken down work van
or truck. Remember the stock part is a plastic "bonded together" assembly "living" in a
vibration and heat rich environment while being subjected to high pressure. Our SRE-06 turbo
resonator Eliminator is made of solid billet aluminum and is "happy" in all three environments.
Q. What Sprinter models are affected?
A. This seems to depend upon with whom you are speaking. Our opinion is
2004, 2005 and 2006 models all of which are equipped with the 2.7 liter turbo diesel. We have
been told of failures happening on models prior to 2004.
Q. Will replacing the stock turbo resonator with the resonator Eliminator
void my new vehicle warranty?
A. According to Sprinter dealers and representatives we have spoken
with, it will not affect your warranty since it makes no change to the operational aspects
of the vehicle. It does not alter the performance or the emission control systems in any way.
It simply replaces a plastic assembly with a lifetime billet aluminum part.
Q. If my turbo resonator is working ok now should I wait until I have
trouble to replace it?
A. It is our experience that some Sprinters may never experience the
problem while others have experienced multiple failures in the first 5,000 miles of operations.
On our own Sprinter RV, we changed it immediately to avoid ever having to worry about a
breakdown at an inconvenient time or place. Some of our customers leave their stock
resonator in place and carry our Eliminator in their tool box for emergency replacement,
much like a spare tire.
Like all of our products, the SRE-06 is backed by our 100% satisfaction
guarantee.
This unique patent pending pack was conceived by a friend of mine, Rick Wylie, a prolific
inventor and avid bicyclist. As president of one of the world's largest mechanical contracting
firms, Rick wanted a small pack that could be used by his jobsite superintendents to keep their
Nextel phones close at hand and their pockets free of bulky items. The Holdstar proved itself
at work and at play and is perfect for carrying your wallet, keys, cell phone and personal
protection devices as well. Whether you are a serious hiker, jogger, bicycle rider, pilot,
boater, motorcyclist or business person, the Holdstar hip pack holds all of your necessities
while leaving your pockets free of bulky items. You will love it.
The Holdstar's accordion-type side pleats allow you fold the pack nearly flat while
carrying only your wallet, cell phone and keys or open up the accordion style side panels by
simply separating the hook and loop fastener strips and your Holdstar will hold much more including
pepper spray for protection from animals or medium sized handguns for ultimate protection.
(where legal).
The Holdstar comes with a comfortable and adjustable full-width Nylon type belt with
snap-in buckles however this belt can be removed easily and your own belt can slip through the
Holdstar's belt loops.
What others say about the Holdstar Hip Pack "The Holdstar is a great replacement for the bulky fanny pack I used to use when I went
hiking with the family. I like the ease with which I can open up the Holdstar to carry my personal
protection devices or fold it flat when I need only my wallet and keys. Very versatile!"
Barry Rhein
"As an aerobatic pilot and instructor, the Holdstar works perfectly to keep my cell

This street legal replica of the famed Bugatti grand prix car was built by Jim Riordan in
less than a year as a hobby project. Upon completion it was given to his son Brett Riordan who
drives the car recreationally in Southern California.
Many innovative features are found on this car including using the cap on the fake
radiator as a filler cap for the fuel tank, a large fully functional ratchet type parking brake
handle which is mounted on the driver side exterior and a completely removable boat tail rear
section which allows total access to the rear mounted engine and transaxle.
The CD includes photos with caption descriptions of every step of the building
process. Not to be confused with a "builder's manual" complete with drawings, this CD is best
suited for persons familiar with working on cars who can use the "TLAR method" (That Looks
About Right) to design their own version of this VERY fun open wheel car. This car is much more
fun to build from scratch, than kit cars, or fiberglass-replica cars. And when finished your car
will be unique. A true one-of-a-kind work of art.
The CD includes a detailed wiring chart in PDF format explaining each wire in the e
lectrical harnessing, a PDF of the materials list and cost of each item that went into the car.
A detailed list of all suppliers along with their phone numbers and in most cases specific part
numbers is supplied.
Also included are PDFs of the forms you will need to complete to register the car
with the department of Motor Vehicles and information on how to apply for the California SB100
smog exemption which allows you build a radical engine and exhaust system without the bother and
limitations of having smog checks every two years
Whether you are thinking of building a roadster from scratch, or if you are
planning to build one from a kit, there is no better place to start than this CD which will
give you many creative ideas.

This street legal "L-Type" open wheel roadster was built by Jim Riordan in 10 months as a
hobby project after giving the replica 1926 Bugatti to son Brett Riordan. Within a week after
giving him the Bugatti, Jim began missing the thrill of driving an "open-wheel" hot rod around
town.
This time, Jim chose as his inspiration a mix between a modified 1927 model "T"
Ford which had been given to Edsel Ford as a gift and a 32 roadster that famous hot rod builder
Boyd Coddington built for the sole purpose of winning the Oakland roadster show. (Boyd DID win
the show.)
Starting from rough sketches, Jim applied his own design features including a
hinged rear section that allows the entire back end of the car to be raised for engine access
and a unique air cylinder operated aluminum roof, painted with truck bed liner paint (less the
heavy grit) that looks like a "rag top" and lifts up for easy entry and exit and then shuts
gently. This car has been given the designation "L-Type" because of the many form/shape inputs
Lynn Riordan contributed to this project.
This CD includes photos with caption descriptions of every step of the building
process. Not to be confused with a "builder's manual" complete with drawings, this CD is best

Jim Riordan flying AVID sideways down runway while climbing. Please note, that in this photograph, the aircraft is flying perfectly straight down the dotted lines on the runway. CLICK TO ENLARGE
The Avid Flyer aircraft was designed by Dean Wilson and then the design was (according to a
former owner of Avid) stolen by Denney aircraft and renamed the "Kitfox". Since then, many other
versions of this design have been marketed under other names including the "Ridgerunner", "Eurofox"
and "Airdale Flyer." The upside is that this CD will benefit builders of any of these aircraft
because of their similarities.
This photo CD takes you from the AVID factory in Montana for pickup of the kit to
the runway for test flights. This Avid two seat aircraft was built by Jim Riordan to satisfy his
desire for a plane that had aerobatic capability while at the same time being able to get in and
out of short, unimproved runways (read: dirt roads, levees, river banks, back yards, etc.) Using
information from Jimmy Franklin, a famous stunt pilot, Jim modified his Avid and ended up with what
he considers his ultimate airplane. It will literally climb out while flying sideways, perform
most standard aerobatic maneuvers and still offers docile predicable handling throughout the flight
envelope including a stall speed of less than 30mph (single occupancy).
Again, this CD is not a builder's manual but will prove invaluable to anyone building
a Kitfox or Avid type aircraft as a reference. Many photos are provided of virtually every facet
of construction. There are photos which will answer questions not typically addressed in builders'
manuals. Using the CD as a reference, a builder can print out photos of the assembly currently
under construction making it much easier to understand each assembly. PDFs of Jim's electrical
wiring chart and CG calculators are also provided.
There are photos of a BRS ballistic parachute installation that is unique to this
aircraft and has been approved for warranty purposes by BRS. The parachute exits through an egress
door in the top of the aircraft rather than from the bottom of the airframe as shown on most
Kitfoxes and Avids. Jim Riordan is a firm believer in ballistic parachutes since his life was
saved by one. He is "save 141" and the story of his save can be found on www.brsparachutes.com.
There are photos of different Kitfoxes and Avids provided to help the builder choose color schemes, finishing techniques, avionics placements, etc.
Also included on the CD are all the FAA forms necessary to register your aircraft as a light sport aircraft (ELSA) or as an Amateur Built Experimental.
Building an AVID Aerobatic S.T.O.L Aircraft from a Kit - CD
In creating the new Light Sport aircraft (LSA) category and giving all Ultralight
aircraft owners an opportunity to convert their aircraft to either Experimental Light
Sport Aircraft (ELSA) or Amateur Built Experimentals, (A/B Experimental) the FAA has opened
up thousands of opportunities for aviators and has created what may be the largest growth
area of aviation since the Wright brothers first flight.
Since you can fly an ELSA or an A/B Experimental that qualifies as an LSA, without having
to undergo those pesky biennial flight physicals, many new and old aviators as well will be
able to fly with only a driver's license as proof of medical fitness.
The questions left unanswered for the average pilot/builder/Ultralight owner are:
What forms do I fill out?
Where do I get them?
Are there examples of how I should fill them out?
Should I register my plane as an LSA or as an AB Experimental?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of either one.
This CD contains PDFs of all the forms you will need to fill out, examples of
the proper way to fill out the forms, examples of "program letters" that must accompany your
request for a special airworthiness certificate and most importantly an explanation of
considerations in choosing whether to go ELSA or A/B Experimental.
The program letter is supplied in PDF and in "Word" so that you can simply change
the information yourself and print out your own program letter.
